Book Tells Parish History

A History of Notre Dame de la Paix:

Our Lady of Peace Church Parish, Vacherie, Louisiana

Written by former pastor Father Henry Gautreau

Father Henry Gautreau has written a 325-page hardbound volume representing years of research, interviews, travel, writing, editing, and selection of photographs, charts, and maps.

The front cover of the book, printed in a lovely sepia and gold tone, is Father Gautreau's favorite picture of the church, taken after 1902. In the photo, the church is surrounded by a picket fence and has a cistern along the side wall of the structure near the main entrance.

On the back cover is a picture of Antoine "Creole" Batiste pausing to pray The Angelus in the cane field in front of the church. That photo was taken some time after 1954.

About the book Father Gautreau said, "I enjoyed learning about the history of Notre Dame de la Paix/Our Lady of Peace Church and the Vacherie area through the research I did for the book. I feel certain that it will bring back some personal memories to long-time parishioners and friends of the parish. Undoubtedly, it will also give some new awareness of situations and events that are no longer in the memory of living persons; and perhaps some sense of connections between them. I hope my book will give enjoyment to all who read it, and increased participation for how far Our Lady of Peace Parish has come in its 158 years of existence."

The book is dedicated "to all the faithful parishioners of Our Lady of Peace Parish who, over the years since 1854, have prayed and given of themselves in loving service for the upbuilding of the Body of Christ in the Vacherie community."

The inside of the 8 1/2 by 11 size book is done in large-size type for ease of reading by persons of all ages. It contains well over a hundred charts, graphs, maps, and photographs.

This handsome and impressive publication will certainly be a welcome addition to anyone's library of historic publications.
